Bagley Peace Prize

Bagley Peace Prize

Each week, 5th grade students from rooms 5, 8 and 213 come to the library to work collaboratively on Current Events.  We are now moving on to more in depth research in preparation for highlighting nominees for the first annual Bagely Peace Prize.  Thanks to Andy Plemmons for his guidance and inspiration!

After selecting and researching a notable person, students will write and record their nomination video to be shared via FlipGrid.  Our researchers will then solicit votes from our DBE Community (forthcoming Google Form) and Beyond to tabulate and eventually award the winner the Bagley Peace Prize.

Our Bagley Peace Prize will be awarded to the candidate that exemplifies the following criteria: dependable, kind peaceful, determined, modest, fair, brave, loyal, honest, respectful and helpful.

2nd Annual March Book Madness

For the second time, DBE Readers will be participating in a worldwide March Book Madness.  Thanks to the Nerdy Book Club, all DBE readers have the opportunity to help seed (select) 16 participants (books) to compete in a bracket modeled after NCAA’s March Madness.  The theme for 2016 is FANTASY vs. FICTION.

Brackets are available for Picture Books, Middle Grade Readers and Young Adult Titles.  DBE Readers will be looking solely at the Pictures Books Bracket.  Thanks to our DBE PTA, and their Special Initiatives Grant, we will have 3 copies of each MBM title available!

If your student would like to submit their selections, independent of our school wide selections, they can simply use the Picture Books Form (available after March 1).

Let the Games Begin!

C4/5s Tackle Voting Rights

In order to prepare ourselves for our CBA (Classroom Based Assessment), we will begin to explore the issue of Voting Rights through the following Glog.  We will be researching Voter IDs and looking at how voting rights are or are not a common good.

Be sure to keep track of your sources.  You can find a copy of our Glogster Bibliography here.

A Reader’s BINGO – Let’s Play!

Many DBE Classrooms have begun to play book BINGO both as individual readers and as a classroom community.  Our BINGO boards provide:KidBingo

  • an opportunity to encourage reading for all DBE readers
  • motivation to read outside of our comfort zones
  • a focal point for students to share what they are reading
  • an alternative to the traditional reading log used for homework
  • a goal setting strategy that honors the reader’s choice rather than an algorithm of reading proficiency (think Magic Treehouse rather than a “level M”)
  • new opportunities for teachers and students to share their reading lives with each other

WynkoopBingoDBE Families can get in on the BINGO action – especially with an extended holiday break just around the corner.  Choose which BINGO board fits your family best and just get started!

Once you get going, share your BINGO squares and pics of your BINGO boards on Twitter @dbelibrary.

Fall Book Fair – Hooray!

Our Fall Book Fair was a huge success!!  Thanks to Mary Park and Alison Rice, our book fair co-chairs, for your all of your help.

In partnership with the University of Washington Bookstore, 25% of all book sales directly support the continued growth of our school library.  This year, Daniel Bagley Library will receive over $2000 in store credit!

Thank you to everyone who was able to support our library with purchases or with your volunteer hours.
