#MBM2015 Continues!

MBM2015March Book Madness Continues in the DBE Library.  We have 32 books MBM45competing in 2 divisions (2014, prior to 2014).  It has be a phenomenally enjoyable experience for everyone and our students sharing in the joys and wonders of picture books.  Stay tuned, as the brackets heat up, we’ll share more!

March Book Madness!

MBM2015For the first time, DBE Readers will be participating in a worldwide March Book Madness.  Thanks to the Nerdy Book Club, all DBE readers have the opportunity to help seed (select) 64 participants (books) to compete in a bracket modeled after NCAA’s March Madness.

Brackets are available for Picture Books, Middle Grade Readers and Young Adult Titles.  DBE Readers will be looking solely at the Picture Books Bracket.

If your student would like to submit their selections, independent of our school wide selections, they can simply use the Picture Books form and list their top ten titles for each of the 2 categories (2014 and before 2014).

Valentine’s Day Guessing Game

candy2015Each year the DBE holds a Valentine’s Candy Guessing Game.  Each DBE student has the opportunity to guess how many candy’s are in the jar.  Same jar every year, just new/different candy!  After all guesses are in, the student that guesses correctly, or the closest, will win the jar of candy for their classroom.

This year’s candy are the classic candy heart.  My favorite saying is “Sup Babe.”  I can even say in a way that makes the kiddos laugh each and every time!  Currently our guesses range from 82 to 7,009.  What would you guess?

iPads in the Library

In January we are using our time together in the library to introduce and practice the use of a PED (Personal Electronic Device) as a tool while at school.  In particular, we are fortunate enough to have a full class set of iPads available to us.

All  DBE students, K-5, agree to the following:

I will only use the iPad for its
intended purpose.
And if I don’t,
I will not use the iPad.

While the use of technology to enhance, enrich and support our work as students is vital to our continued growth as 21st century digitial citizens, is indeed a growing necessity, it still stands that the use of the iPads at DBE is a privilege and not a right.  The agreement above, coupled with our conversations in class prior to using the iPads illustrates how our use of PEDs at home is often guided by different principles that our use of PEDs at school. We draw the line between home/entertainment and school/education.

Each grade level is using the iPads in different ways to practice our in school protocols and procedures.  Every students is assigned an iPad color and number that will be their iPad for the remainder of the school year.  This helps to streamline distribution and collection as well as follow up with a user when an iPad has any issues regarding condition or content.

Our 4/5s have been using the iPads for some time now while our K-3s are using this time to acclimate themselves to a library that offers them access to iPads as a resource.

Team Epic starts DBE Reader Recs

Thanks to Ms. O and Team Epic, DBE Library users now have access to student recommendation presentations via the DBE Library’s blog.  Taking knowledge gained from working with Keynote in the library, some intros to Infographics students independently built Recommendation Presentations.

Daryl McDonald – Nelson Treehouse and Supply

treehouse1As a culminating event for our Trees and Treehouse unit, we were fortunate enough to have Daryl McDonald, From Nelson Treehouse and Supply, come talk with us about trees and treehouse design and build.

For a FULL 60 minutes our 1/2/3, 2/3, 2, and 3/4 classes sat and listened in wonder as Mr. McDonald shared stories, images and tools of the trade with our students.  He even allowed for almost 20 minutes of questions!  Student treehouse designs will remain in their Field Journals, in the library, until the end of the year but will eventually all go home in June.  Of course if you’d like to stop by and see your student’s design, feel free to pop into the library before or after school on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday!

Author & Illustrator Julie Paschkis!

This Friday, from 3-3:30pm the Daniel Bagley Library is excited to welcome Author and Illustrator Julie Paschkis!  Ms. Paschkis is coming to talk to our youngest (K and 1) scholars about he work as an Author and Illustrator.  Thanks Ms. McNeer for this unique opportunity to collaborate with you and for making all necessary arrangements to bring Ms. Paschkis to us!

From our K/1 Library Curriculum this week:

For our November unit we are preparing ourselves as readers for a visit from a real, live, author and illustrator, Julie Paschkis!  In October, while with Ms. McNeer for art, Ks and 1s were studing chickens.  Ms. Paschkis’ book Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crockodile was one of many books and materials students used when drawing their chickens.

Ms. McNeer has contacted Ms. Paschkis and she is coming to talk with our Ks and 1s about her jobs as both an author and an illustrator.  During library time we are identifying the different roles of both the author and the illustrator as well as diving deeply into many of Ms. Paschkis’ works:

In addition to preparing our Passports for Ms.mooshka2 Paschkis’ visit, we are designing our own Mooskas (quilts) – each with 6 different schnitzs (a quilt block that tells a story).

CCSS RL.K.6 With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of each in telling the story.

RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

Thank You Jacqueline West

imageWhat an amazing afternoon!  On Thursday 10/23 author Jacqueline West came to our library to talk with our 4th and 5th grade students about her series of books, Elsewhere.  The most recent and final book in the series, Still Life, was published this past summer.

The Treehouse Man!

As if having Jacqueline West come next week is not enough, we are currently literarypumpkins2014working with Daryl from The Treehouse Masters to secure a date and time to talk about our treehouse designs, trees and our BIG tree on our playground.  Our 1/2/3, 2/3, 2, and 3/4 classes are so excited for Daryl’s visit in December!

In addition, this week all Bagley Bees are working on creating their own Literary Pumpkins!
