Jacqueline West is Coming!

seetingsceneJacqueline West, author of the Elsewhere Series, will be coming to Bagley to talk with our 4th and 5th grade students about her newest book in the series.  We have begun to prepare for her arrival!
Listening to the first few chapters, in audio format, DBE Readers are taking notes (in their library sketchbooks) that describe the scene/setting of the first book, The Shadows.  After students review their notes and select 5-7 important descriptors, they are using the libary’s iPads to create one page info graphic that set the scene of the story.  Students are quickly learning that their keywords directly impact their search results and are working to target their searches.

CCSS
RL.4.3, RL.5.3 I can describe, in depth, a setting in a story drawing on specific details in the text.

Our newest Bagley Bee!

kaya

Kaya will be joining the Daniel Bagley Library’s collection. This fall she will begin to circulate with a few of her books, a journal for students to tell us what Kaya does while she is with them and a few accessories to help take care of her while she is visiting the homes of different Bagley Bees.  We are so excited to welcome Kaya to Daniel Bagley.  If you’d like more information about the New York Public Library’s American Girl Doll circulation, you can read more!

Summer Reading!

DBE Library Summer Reading – Keeping Kids in Books

Summer reading should be as simple as keeping kids in books.  Recently Common Sense Media’s blog posted an article, “How to Raise a Reader: 10 Tips for Getting Your Kids Hooked on Books – ebook or the paper kind.”   While the article is intended to guide families as they build lives as readers, the tips are also great guideposts for summer reading.

Senior Editor, Books, Regan McMahon offers the following:

  1. Read aloud
  2. Savor the series
  3. Grab onto a genre
  4. Feed the favorite-author addiction
  5. Count the classics
  6. Find books about the things your kid loves
  7. Funny is fine
  8. Comics are OK
  9. Engage with eBooks
  10. Make reading a family value

On Wednesday June 18th, Erin Moehring from the Greenwood Branch of the Seattle Public Library will be talking with our readers during our final community meeting of the year.  Ms. Moehring will be introducing SPL’s new summer reading program – Zone in! – a program that will look considerably different in comparison to years past.

In addition to the SPL Summer Reading Program, many local book stores offer summer reading programs and incentives:

Here’s to a great summer filled with adventure.  Thanks for helping to keep our DBE Readers in Books all summer long!

Spring Book Fair – right around the corner!

SPRING BOOK FAIR!  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 21-23)

During Book Fair week, students will be given the opportunity to browse the selecetion, brought to us by the University Bookstore, and make wish lists to share with the loving adults in their lives.  Book Fair will be open for purchases each day after school.  More details to come.

25% of all purchases directly support the purchase of new materials for the DBE Library.

Thank you DBE PTA!

moFor the past 2 years, the DBE Library has been fortunate enough to have been awarded multiple special initiative grants provided by our very generous PTA here at Daniel Bagley Elementary.  Most recently we received a grant to revitalize our Gerald and Piggie collection by Mo Willems.  At the time of the grant request, the DBE Library had 68 copies of 19 titles that had circulated 4222 times total since the library first began acquiring titles in 2007.  Thanks to the PTA, our grant titled “Operation Elephant and Piggie Rescue: Code Name Gerald” added 42 new books to our library’s collection.

All of our DBE Readers would like to say Thank You to our PTA for your continued support!

Thank you J. Scott Savage

savageThank you to J. Scott Savage for coming to the DBE Library and spending over an hour with our students!  When Mr. Savage arrived early for his presentation, both Ms. Manley’s and Ms. O’s classes were able to meet him and show off our tremendous wall of research that helped prepare us for his visit.  We even created a very comprehensive list of questions prior to his arrival.  While we did not have time to answer each and every question, students were ready and waiting with their hands raised – so well prepared and engaged!savagewall2

Mr. Savage shared with us 4 steps to writing a story, inspirational stories of amazing people who have overcome incredible obstacles and we laughed the whole way through his presentation.  In addition, I was able to deliver 21 signed and personalized copies of his books to some very fortunate DBE readers today!

New and Improved?

The DBE Library’s Blog has tried on a new pair of shoes!  Our new theme is “Superhero” and I’ve chosen it to try and make this blog more readable on mobile devices.  The Menu at the top contains specific curricular content by grade level.  The nav bar (links, subscriptions, calendar, etc) is located at the bottom when you are viewing from a mobile device.  Let me know what you think, rlwynkoop@seattleschools.org.

3/28, 77% and 68

MarchGoalThe DBE Library is delighted to announce that we will be hosting author J. Scott Savage in the Library on Friday March 28th!  Mr. Savage is best known for his two series’ FarWorld and Case File 13. Most of our 4/5 classes will be listening to Mr. Savage for about 45 minutes!  In preparation for his visit, the 4/5 classes began doing research on Mr. Savage  this week.  We’ll share our information, prepare questions and explore his works prior to his arrival.

Our 4/5 students have also continued to work towards meetings their reading goals.  Today I was able to confirm that 97 of our 4/5 students have met their reading goals set back in November.  We are at 77% and climbing – working towards a full 100%

Lastly, this came up simply as I was glancing at the calendar for the rest of the year – there are only 68 school days left!  Holy Bagumba!

Happy Valentines Day!

We had a busy week this week, Valentines and Friendship books, guessing how much?, reading more of the newest Newberry Award winning novel Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures, and wrapping our brains around dichotomous keys (check this dichotomous CANDY key out)!  For more information on what is happening in your child’s class during library time, be sure to follow the links above.

On a day like today I LOVE to share a few jokes:
